The Miami Dolphins are preparing for a Week 3 home opener against the 2-0 Kansas City Chiefs at Hard Rock Stadium, with Jeff Hafley emphasizing physicality and sustained effort from the opening snap through the final whistle.

Hard Rock Stadium is preparing to host its 40th Miami Dolphins home opener. The matchup will be the Dolphins’ first regular-season NFL game at the stadium since 2025, and Miami plans to wear its classic white jerseys.

Miami faces a versatile Kansas City offense

The Kansas City Chiefs entered the week with a 2-0 record and present a significant challenge for Miami. Hafley identified running back Kenneth Walker as a central part of an offense that also features a highly regarded quarterback, multiple fast receivers, one of the league’s top tight ends and a solid offensive line.

Walker entered the week leading the league in rushing. Hafley said that production could force defenses to choose between loading the box to stop Walker and creating opportunities for Kansas City to attack downfield.

“He adds such a dynamic dimension to their offense, right? Obviously, the quarterback is one of the best quarterbacks in this league, has been for a very long time. They have receivers, multiple receivers who can fly. They have one of the best tight ends in the league who’s done it time and time again. And they’re o-line’s solid. So now you add one of the premier backs in this league who’s currently leading the league in rushing, it’s all right, you want to load the box, and you want to stop the runner. Well, then they got guys who can run by people, and they have a quarterback who can keep it alive and throw the ball down the field,” Hafley said.

Linebacker Jordyn Brooks called the Chiefs “probably one of the top five teams in the league right now.” He said the game would give Miami a chance to bounce back from Week 2 and measure itself against a strong opponent.

“So it’s a challenge for everybody going out there, coaches, players, all included, to go out there and perform, execute, and come away with a W,” Brooks said.

Dolphins stress effort through the final whistle

Miami has made consistent effort and physicality a central part of its preparation. Hafley said the team’s leaders and veterans must show younger players how to maintain that standard, even when a game is out of reach.

“When you’re in the huddle and I’m in the huddle with those guys and the game’s out of reach and I’m looking them in the eye and they are so intent and they’re playing as hard as they did the first snap of the game, that’s important to me. And it shows that those are the right guys and isn’t like that everywhere. That’s why I appreciate the leaders that we have on this team and the vets that we have on this team, because they’re doing that. And it’s important for them to do that so the younger guys see what it’s supposed to be like so as we do build this thing, that’s the mentality that we have. Because I do think there’s some rareness to that in the NFL,” Hafley said.

Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik said Miami will apply the same standard to the first and last plays of the game. He specifically pointed to displacing defenders, finishing plays, adding to tackles and creating forward movement for ball carriers.

“The standard we’re going to hold everybody to the first play of the game is the same standard we’re going to hold guys to the last play of the game. Are we displacing people? Are we finishing people when the ball carrier is getting tackled by multiple people? Are we adding into the pile and making sure that we’re creating the surge forward for two, three yards? I believe in that wholeheartedly. Obviously, Coach Hafley has talked about it numerous times. He believes in that wholeheartedly. And I think our team has really embraced that,” Slowik said.

Miami Dolphins welcome regular-season home opener

Quarterback Malik Willis said he was excited to play in front of Miami fans during the regular season. He recalled the preseason atmosphere and expected a larger crowd for the home opener.

“I’m excited. I think it would be cool, just like the preseason was cool. I mean, being on the sideline and just having the Fins fans in the building. It was cool and I just expect that to be doubled or tripled. A lot more people want to come to regular (season) games than they do preseason,” Willis said.

Hafley said he was looking forward to the energy the fans would bring when the players run onto the field. The Week 3 game is scheduled for Hard Rock Stadium, although the date and kickoff time were not provided.

“I’m looking forward to our players getting a chance to play in front of our fans, to have some energy brought into the stadium. I think that’s always fun when they run out into the field, playing in front of our crowd for the first time,” Hafley said.

FSB Take

The Miami Dolphins are entering their home opener against a Kansas City Chiefs team that began the week 2-0. Miami’s clearest challenges will be containing Kenneth Walker, sustaining its physical approach and matching the Chiefs’ effort throughout the game. The setting also carries significance, with Hard Rock Stadium preparing to host its 40th Dolphins home opener and its first regular-season NFL game for Miami since 2025.
