Lake-Sumter State College was founded in 1962, and its modern Lakehawks athletic program has expanded rapidly in the 2010s and 2020s. Women's volleyball became the first team in college history to reach an NJCAA national tournament in 2018, and the school later added cross country, beach volleyball, track and golf. By the mid-2020s Lake-Sumter teams had accumulated numerous NJCAA national appearances and several top-10 finishes.
