Spencer Henke will lead the Saint Leo University men’s basketball team to Tallahassee for an exhibition against Florida A&M on Tuesday, October 27. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the Al Lawson Center, and admission is free. The game will give Saint Leo an opportunity to evaluate its progress against a different style of competition while preparing for the upcoming season.
Saint Leo prepares for a new opponent
The exhibition follows Saint Leo University’s previous game against South Florida. Henke said the matchup with Florida A&M will test the team’s ability to adjust quickly from one opponent and game plan to another. That transition will be important as Saint Leo continues working through different styles of play ahead of the season.
“I’m extremely thankful to Coach Ward for this opportunity and excited to get back on the floor with these guys,” Henke said. “FAMU will look very different from USF, which will prepare us for the varying styles of play we’ll see this season. More importantly, though, this game will give us our first chance to see whether or not we can quickly transition from one opponent to the next in terms of scheme and scouting report details.”
Saint Leo University men’s basketball is emphasizing defensive awareness, offensive fundamentals and overall consistency. The exhibition will provide a competitive setting for the Lions to measure those areas against Florida A&M. It also will allow the team to apply lessons from its previous exhibition against South Florida.
Henke points to defensive and offensive priorities
Henke said Saint Leo has focused on improving on both sides of the ball since the South Florida exhibition. He specifically identified transition defense and offensive fundamentals as areas that need significant improvement. Tuesday’s game will give the Lions a chance to respond to those priorities against a new opponent.
“We are still in the process of getting better on both sides of the ball and have been really focused on making sure Saint Leo doesn’t beat Saint Leo since Monday Night @ USF,” Henke said. “I was not happy with our transition defense attention to detail and our offensive fundamentals at USF, so these have been two areas I want to see improve massively at FAMU. I believe a lot in these guys and their ability to respond – which is exactly what Tuesday’s game gives us – A Chance to Respond and be LIONS.”
