The Jupiter Hammerheads lost 10-5 to the Clearwater Threshers on Friday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, despite two home runs from Echedry Vargas. The loss left Jupiter with records of 12-22 and 49-51, while Clearwater was listed at 19-14 and 59-40. The Hammerheads finished July with an 8-16 record.
Clearwater took a 3-0 lead in the second inning against Jupiter starting pitcher Emmett Olson. Jonathan Hogart hit a two-run home run, his second homer of the series, before Victor Cardoza reached on an error that allowed Matthew Ferrara to score. Olson, making a rehab appearance from High-A Beloit in his first pitching appearance since June 3, 2025, was removed after 1 1/3 innings.
Jupiter got on the board in the fourth inning when Luis Arana hit an RBI infield single. PJ Morlando opened the inning with a single, and Andres Valor drew a walk before a double play moved Morlando to third. Vargas tied the game in the fifth inning with his team-leading 13th home run of the season, a two-run shot after Jake McCutcheon reached on an infield single and advanced on a wild pitch.
Clearwater regained the lead in the sixth inning against Jupiter reliever Gerinton Mendez, who was charged with the loss and listed with a 1-2 record. Mendez struck out two batters but allowed a bunt single and four walks, leading to two runs before Engel Peralta entered the game. Will Gasparino then hit a grand slam for his first professional hit and home run, giving the Threshers a 9-3 lead.
Andres Valor answered for Jupiter in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run, his 12th homer of the season. Clearwater added an insurance run in the eighth, and Vargas followed with his second home run of the game, a solo shot that made the score 10-5. The Hammerheads did not score again.
Vargas’ performance marked his first multi-home-run game as a member of the Miami Marlins organization and his first since June 13, 2024, when he played for the Down East Wood Ducks. Elier Morillo provided 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out seven, which tied his season high. Clearwater starting pitcher Zuher Yousuf earned the win and was listed with a 3-1 record.
