Echedry Vargas helped the Jupiter Hammerheads win the 2026 Florida State League Championship while earning the league Most Valuable Player award, the Florida State League Triple Crown and several other honors.

The 21-year-old infielder also was named the Marlins Single-A Most Valuable Player, a Florida State League Post-Season All-Star at first base and the Florida State League Player of the Month for August. His awards came after a season in which he established the Jupiter Hammerheads’ single-season home run record.

Vargas hit .323 with a .372 on-base percentage, a .611 slugging percentage and a .983 OPS in 103 games. He added 27 home runs and 94 RBIs, leading the Florida State League in total bases with 229, OPS with .983 and extra-base hits with 52.

A record-setting season in Jupiter

Vargas’ 27 home runs surpassed the previous Jupiter Hammerheads single-season record of 24, set by Marcell Ozuna in 2012. He also became one of three Minor League players in 2026 with at least 25 home runs and a batting average above .320.

Despite reaching the franchise milestone, Vargas said he was focused on helping the team rather than pursuing the record.

“Honestly, I feel proud of the work I’ve been doing. I wasn’t focused on a record or anything like that. I was just going to give my best on the field to help the team win.”

Vargas continued to produce during the postseason. He went 8-for-22 in five playoff games with two home runs, six RBIs, one double, two walks and 15 total bases, leading the Jupiter Hammerheads in those games as the club won the Florida State League Championship.

From adjustment to breakthrough

The Miami Marlins organization acquired Vargas, infielder Maximo Acosta and pitcher Brayan Mendoza from the Texas Rangers on Dec. 11, 2024, in exchange for Jake Burger. Vargas originally signed with the Texas Rangers on Jan. 15, 2022, and played three seasons with the organization before joining Miami.

Vargas said the move was difficult but gave him an opportunity to continue his career with the Miami Marlins organization.

“I felt sad, but that’s part of the business. And I feel that I have more opportunities to move forward with this team. That’s a good thing for me.”

He said his first year with the Miami Marlins organization did not go well because he lacked a plan and routine. Vargas used the offseason to address the details that had affected him before returning with a more positive mindset.

“My first year didn’t go very well. I mean, I didn’t have a plan in mind or a routine. I worked on the little details where I saw I had gone wrong. I worked hard in the offseason and came back with a new, positive mindset,” Vargas said.

Vargas identified hitting as the area he most wanted to improve after the previous season. He said he did not make a major change to his swing during his power surge, instead relying on the same routine.

A championship season built on consistency

Vargas began playing baseball at age 7 with his cousins in the Dominican Republic. His 2026 season with the Jupiter Hammerheads combined individual production with a championship for the Florida State League club.

When discussing his success, Vargas credited his faith and emphasized the importance of remaining positive during difficult stretches.

“No, no, it’s all God’s will. I’m always grateful to God for what He gives us. And I always stay positive. You have to keep going strong. Whether times are bad or good, you just have to keep moving forward.”

Vargas said he plans to continue improving every part of his game during the offseason. He said a strong season at the plate or on defense does not eliminate the need to keep working.

“Improve — just keep improving everything. You always have to improve a little bit of everything. Just because you had a good year hitting or on defense doesn’t mean you stop working. You always have to keep working on the same things and stay focused.”

Away from baseball, Vargas said he enjoys spending time with friends and family, going out with friends and playing video games. His preferred baseball video game is MLB The Show.

FSB Take

Vargas delivered the Jupiter Hammerheads a record-setting offensive season and postseason production during their Florida State League championship run. The MVP award, Triple Crown and franchise home run record define the scope of his 2026 performance, while his comments point to continued work on every part of his game.
