The Miami Heat lost 125-124 to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Kaseya Center. Miami outscored Minnesota 40-34 in the fourth quarter. The Timberwolves had entered the final period with a seven-point lead. That left the Heat’s late push one point short as Minnesota held on.
Fourth-quarter push comes up just short
Minnesota held a 24-23 lead after the opening quarter and extended its advantage with a 36-33 second period. That put Miami behind 60-56 at halftime. The Timberwolves then won the third quarter 31-28, taking a 91-84 lead into the fourth. Miami answered with a 40-point final period, but Minnesota scored 34 to hold on.
Bones Hyland scored 23 points for Minnesota, according to the NBA game summary. The narrow finish gives Miami a useful game to study because one possession could have changed the result. A late scoring burst can keep a team competitive, but it also leaves less room for missed defensive assignments earlier in the game. That balance between offensive production and consistent stops deserves attention as the exhibition schedule winds down.
Brooklyn and Orlando remain on the preseason schedule
Miami hosts Brooklyn on Oct. 14 before visiting Orlando on Oct. 16. The remaining exhibitions give the Heat more opportunities to evaluate combinations and late-game execution. The Florida matchup will also give fans another look at the Heat before regular season results begin to count. Coaches can use those games to test decisions that a close finish like this one brings into focus.
FSB Take
The final score matters less than the habits Miami can improve before opening night. The Heat showed that they could produce enough offense to erase most of a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit. My concern would be the earlier stretches that forced them to chase the game in the first place. Miami should use its remaining preseason games to build steadier possessions on both ends, so a strong finish becomes a bonus instead of a requirement.
