Miami Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis said he is grateful for the opportunity to start the season opener as QB1 and is focused on preparing for the National Football League game. Willis said his preparation has included practice, walkthroughs, mental repetitions and continued work to learn the offense.
“Yeah, it’s really cool. I’m super grateful and obviously, I’m gonna just try to take advantage of the opportunity,” Willis said during his Sept. 9 media availability. He said he has continued working hard, getting to know his teammates and putting himself in position to execute.
Willis discusses Miami Dolphins young players
Willis described Caleb Douglas and Chris Bell as hard workers who are learning the offense and working to be as detailed as they are talented. He also said the Miami Dolphins could have several rookies on the field, including rookie receivers, tight ends, a guard and a fullback.
Willis said the best way to help the younger players is to take each play one at a time and prepare before game day. He said repeated practice and mental reps can make it easier to handle the decisions required to execute a play.
Willis also said there is no pitch count for Chris Bell, according to Coach Hafley. He praised Bell for working hard to return to practice and reach game readiness.
Miami Dolphins focused on assignments and execution
Willis said the Miami Dolphins must remain aware of pass rusher Maxx Crosby while staying focused on their assignments. He said the team will respond to what opponents actually do rather than outside expectations about how defenses will defend Miami, including expectations involving De’Von Achane and the running game.
Willis said crowd noise in practice can help younger players prepare mentally for game conditions. He also said his game-day routine includes listening to a playlist featuring old school music, hip hop, indie rock and gospel.
When asked to describe the Miami Dolphins with one word, Willis said, “Family.”
“Family. I think the guys are all sticking together. We’re all on this train together. We’re on this journey together,” Willis said.
Willis also discussed spending time watching his brother play at Tarleton State and described the experience as awesome. He said his personal goal is to have fun, help the team succeed and execute.
“Just go out there and have as much fun as possible. I mean, this is an opportunity of a lifetime, bro. Not many people get to play and start football games in the National Football League. I just want to go in there and have some fun and obviously do what I can to make sure that our team is successful and we go out there and execute,” Willis said.
