The Jacksonville Jaguars defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 22-17 on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jacksonville never trailed and secured the victory by holding Cincinnati on downs with 50 seconds remaining.

John Oehser analyzed the result in his O-Zone Late Night column for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The victory gave Jacksonville three wins in its first four games of the season and added another road result against a team Oehser described as good.

Jacksonville never trails

The Jaguars built the victory by executing important plays and drives when needed. Oehser wrote, “The Jaguars on Sunday played a quality team with a quality quarterback on the road. They never trailed and made critical plays in critical moments.”

Oehser described the performance as impressive and important. He also called it the type of road victory that could matter as the season continues, writing, “This was impressive stuff. And important stuff, too.”

Penalties remain a concern

Jacksonville had to overcome a penalty-heavy game. The Jaguars were penalized 13 times for 125 yards, while the Cincinnati Bengals were penalized 11 times for 108 yards.

Oehser acknowledged that the Jaguars committed too many penalties, particularly early. Despite those mistakes, Jacksonville remained in front throughout the game and made the plays necessary to protect the lead.

Late stop secures the victory

Cincinnati had a chance to extend the game late, but Jacksonville held the Bengals on downs with 50 seconds remaining. That ended the Bengals’ final opportunity and secured the 22-17 result.

Responding to the idea that the victory was an ugly one, Oehser wrote, “Winning is winning is winning.” He added, “There’s nothing ugly about winning three of your first four games.”

Ventrell Miller hit draws attention

The game also featured a second-quarter play involving Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Ventrell Miller and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Miller’s hit knocked Chase out of the game.

Asked whether Miller could be suspended, Oehser wrote, “No.” He added that he did not know how Miller could have avoided the play. The source provides no additional disciplinary information.

What the result means

The Jaguars have won three of their first four games and have lost one road game this season. Oehser noted that the road loss came against a good team, while the victory in Cincinnati gave Jacksonville another road win over a quality opponent.

“Beating good teams on the road is hard,” Oehser wrote. Jacksonville’s late stop, its undefeated position in the game and its ability to overcome 13 penalties defined the victory.

FSB Take

Jacksonville’s defining accomplishment was holding its lead against the Cincinnati Bengals and making the final stop required to win on the road. The 13 penalties for 125 yards remain a clear issue, but the Jaguars never trailed and secured a 22-17 victory with 50 seconds left. Reducing those penalties while maintaining that late-game execution will be important for a team that has won three of its first four games.
