The Milwaukee Brewers enter the 2026 World Series as a -160 favorite against the Tampa Bay Rays, who are listed at +140. Both teams are seeking their first World Series title after beginning the season as long-shot championship contenders. Their unexpected matchup has left sportsbooks carrying liability on both clubs.

The Brewers opened the season with 35-1 championship odds, the 14th-best number listed by DraftKings. Tampa Bay began at 80-1, which ranked 22nd. A Rays championship would tie the 1991 Minnesota Twins for the longest preseason underdog odds for a World Series winner, according to SportsOddsHistory.com data.

Early odds created sportsbook exposure

Long preseason odds allowed bettors to secure larger potential payouts, creating liability as money came in on both teams. Caesars Sportsbook said Milwaukee remained a liability in its World Series futures market after late-season support. The Brewers also helped sportsbooks on individual playoff games by eliminating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series and the San Diego Padres.

“The Brewers are still a loss for the house overall on the World Series futures,” Caesars Sportsbook head of baseball Eric Biggio told ESPN by email. “They helped us out, though, on a game-to-game basis against the Dodgers, as well as knocking out the Padres, who were a big liability for us in the futures market.”

BetMGM also considers Milwaukee a loss in its futures book. Tampa Bay winning the championship would be a win for BetMGM. The different positions show how the financial impact of the series varies among sportsbooks.

Florida bettors backed Tampa Bay early

Hard Rock Bet reported stronger Rays ticket support among bettors in Florida than in other states where the sportsbook operates. Among straight World Series tickets from Florida bettors, 21.2% backed Tampa Bay, compared with 7.7% of tickets from bettors in other states. Hard Rock Bet also said bettors backing Milwaukee wagered more than twice the average Rays wager.

That betting pattern has left Hard Rock Bet exposed on both sides of the matchup. Tampa Bay drew more tickets from Florida bettors, while Milwaukee attracted larger average wagers. The sportsbook said early Rays bets at longer odds remain a major factor in its liability.

“We’ve seen a significant late surge in World Series money on Milwaukee, but Tampa Bay remains a major liability for us,” Hard Rock Bet spokesperson Jon Chapper said by email. “Rays fans, particularly in Florida, believed in their team long before October, and many locked in much longer odds earlier in the season. Those early tickets are a big reason Tampa Bay remains such a significant exposure for our book.”

Rays-Brewers matchup carries lower handle expectations

The matchup also presents a different betting profile from recent World Series combinations involving larger national draws. The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees had generated greater betting handle in prior World Series matchups than a potential Tampa Bay-Milwaukee series would be expected to attract. Milwaukee eliminated the Dodgers, while the New York Yankees were also removed from the postseason on a game-to-game basis.

Biggio said those results helped sportsbooks on individual games but were less favorable for overall handle. “Knocking out the Dodgers and Yankees on a game-to-game basis was good for the house, but looking at the bigger picture, it’s not great for handle,” Biggio said. “A baseball nerd like myself would enjoy a potential Rays/Brewers series, but it definitely wouldn’t draw the kind of handle the Dodgers/Yankees did a few years back.”

Game 1 betting details

Game 1 is set for Milwaukee, with the Brewers listed at -164 on the moneyline and the Rays at +135. The over-under is 6. Drew Rasmussen and Jacob Misiorowski are projected to pitch in the opener.

Milwaukee’s Game 1 price is slightly shorter than its overall World Series number. Tampa Bay remains the underdog despite attracting substantial early futures support. The opener will begin the series between two clubs seeking their first championship.

FSB Take

The 2026 World Series has become a major betting story because the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays moved from long-shot preseason positions to the final stage. Florida bettors provided especially strong early ticket support for Tampa Bay through Hard Rock Bet, while larger average wagers on Milwaukee added to the sportsbook’s exposure. That split helps explain why both teams remain important liabilities despite Milwaukee’s status as the series favorite.

The championship prices also give the series historical betting significance. Tampa Bay would match the 1991 Minnesota Twins for the longest preseason underdog odds attached to a World Series winner if it completes the upset. Game 1 in Milwaukee will open the matchup with the Brewers favored at -164 and the total set at 6.
