Carter Verhaeghe is scheduled to play his 500th NHL game Sunday, Oct. 25, when the Florida Panthers face the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center in Chicago. The 31-year-old forward reached the milestone after a career that included 247 games in the minors, two trades and a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020. Tampa Bay did not give Verhaeghe a qualifying offer after that championship season.

Verhaeghe signed with the Panthers as a free agent in October 2020. He has recorded 352 points, including 169 goals and 183 assists, in 447 games over seven seasons in South Florida. He also helped Florida win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2024 and 2025.

Verhaeghe’s long path to the NHL

Before joining Florida, Verhaeghe was a third-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs and spent 247 games in the minors. He was traded twice before establishing himself in the NHL. That journey included difficult stretches before he secured a lasting place in the league.

“It feels amazing. It’s really special. I never thought I’d even be able to play in this league. It’s a dream come true,” Verhaeghe said.

Verhaeghe said the journey included highs and lows and required resilience to maintain his focus. He also said those difficult periods helped build character. His NHL career includes a championship with Tampa Bay and two more with Florida.

Postseason production has defined his Florida tenure

Verhaeghe is Florida’s all-time postseason leader in goals with 33 and game-winning goals with 13. Those marks came during a Panthers tenure that includes the franchise’s consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025. His postseason production has accompanied the team’s recent championship success.

“He’s one of the best playoff players I’ve ever coached,” head coach Paul Maurice said.

Verhaeghe said winning two Stanley Cups with Florida was special because of how the group grew together. He also said he was not the same person he was when he joined the organization. The milestone arrives with his connection to the Panthers central to his NHL career.

“To win two Stanley Cups with this organization, the best part is honestly just how we’ve all grown together as individuals.”

Florida has been home for most of the milestone

Verhaeghe’s 500 NHL games include 448 in a Panthers sweater. He said he cannot see himself playing anywhere else and described Florida as where he belongs. His 500th appearance is scheduled to come against Chicago at United Center on Sunday.

“I can’t see myself playing anywhere else. It’s special. It’s where I belong,” Verhaeghe said.

Verhaeghe said he hopes to reach 1,000 NHL games but understands the difficulty of playing that long. His immediate goal is to continue playing and remain impactful for as long as possible. The 500-game mark gives him a milestone while leaving that longer-term target ahead.

FSB Take

Verhaeghe’s milestone underscores how much of his NHL career has been tied to Florida. With 448 of his 500 games coming as a Panther, his two Stanley Cups and the franchise’s postseason records are directly connected to the organization. His stated goal now is to remain impactful as he continues his career.
