Aaron Sabato’s Major League Baseball debut on Sept. 21 made him the 300th former Fort Myers player to appear in a big-league game since the franchise began as the Miracle in 1992.
The milestone includes players who appeared with the Fort Myers franchise during rehabilitation assignments and may not have progressed through the organization in sequential order. The total covers former Miracle and Fort Myers Mighty Mussels players who have reached a Major League Baseball game.
Sabato was the Minnesota Twins’ first-round selection in 2020. He appeared in 95 games with the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, including 85 games in 2021, before making his MLB debut.
Sabato joins recent Fort Myers alumni
Sabato is the latest Fort Myers alumnus to reach the major leagues. Other recent alumni to make their MLB debuts include Walker Jenkins, Kaelen Culpepper and Emmanuel Rodriguez.
The 300-player milestone connects Sabato’s debut to the Fort Myers franchise’s history under the Miracle and Mighty Mussels names. Fort Myers has played a role in the journeys of players who later appeared in Major League Baseball, including those who joined the organization for rehabilitation assignments.
Fort Myers alumni have earned major honors
The 300 former players have combined for two American League Most Valuable Player awards, two Hall of Famers, eight batting titles, 97 All-Star selections and 26 World Series championships. They also have combined for 28 Silver Slugger awards, 17 Gold Glove awards and one Platinum Glove award.
The group’s additional honors include two Roberto Clemente Awards, three Home Run Derby championships, four League Championship Series MVP awards, one World Series MVP award and two Reliever of the Year awards. The franchise lists Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, David Ortiz, Torii Hunter, A.J. Pierzynski, Michael Cuddyer, Glen Perkins, Rubén Sierra, Liam Hendriks, Byron Buxton, Luis Arraez, Nelson Cruz and Sonny Gray among its prominent alumni.
2027 Mighty Mussels season follows milestone
The next group of future Minnesota Twins is scheduled to return to the diamond in April for the 2027 Mighty Mussels season. That group will represent the next Fort Myers players seeking to add to the franchise’s Major League Baseball alumni total.
For now, Sabato’s debut marks the latest addition to a list that has reached 300 former Miracle or Mighty Mussels players. The milestone spans the franchise’s history in Fort Myers since 1992.
