Polk State Soccer fell to New College of Florida JV, 2-1, Friday in Sarasota, ending its undefeated August. New College of Florida JV scored the winning goal on a second-half penalty kick, handing Polk State its first loss of the season and moving the team to 3-1-1.

New College of Florida JV took a 1-0 lead on a corner kick, which produced the only goal of the first half. Jaycie Noble brought Polk State level in the second half when she scored off an assist from Andrea Romero.

The goal was Noble’s fourth of the season and tied her with Isabella O’Sullivan for the Polk State and FCSAA lead. Noble also led Polk State with nine shots.

New College of Florida JV regained the lead after Polk State’s Agustina Carnero was called for a foul inside the box. The resulting penalty kick slipped past Polk State goalkeeper Violeta Henao for the decisive goal.

Polk State held the shot advantage but could not find another equalizer. Sofia Zapata and Henao combined for nine saves.

“These things that happen in our game — falling behind, fighting back and managing the pressure — are all windows of opportunity to get better,” Head Coach Dee Shivraman said. “It’s disappointing but there is a lot to learn from this as we move forward.”

Polk State returns home Saturday

Polk State is scheduled to host Pasco-Hernando State College on Saturday at 11 a.m. in its final tune-up before FCSAA play. Polk State defeated Pasco-Hernando State College, 2-1, the previous week in New Port Richey.
