Sporting JAX men’s soccer closed its inaugural USL Championship season with a 2-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday night. The match was played Oct. 24, 2026, at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla. Tampa Bay scored in the 29th minute and added another goal late in the second half.

The Tampa Bay Rowdies had recently clinched the Players’ Shield, which is awarded to the USL Championship team that earns the most regular-season points. Sporting JAX created pressure in the final third multiple times during the opening 10 minutes. Goalkeeper Jake McGuire then made an 11th-minute save to deny Tampa Bay the opening goal.

Sporting JAX Starts With Early Energy

McGuire’s save kept Sporting JAX within a scoreless match after the team’s active opening stretch. Sporting JAX reached the final third several times before Tampa Bay broke through in the 29th minute. McGuire said the team entered the match with focus and energy as it tried to finish the season strongly.

“We tried to finish the season off strong, so we came out with a lot of energy, a lot of focus, and I think our team chemistry was really good for those first 20-ish minutes,” McGuire said.

Tampa Bay extended its advantage late in the second half to complete the 2-0 victory. The result concluded Sporting JAX’s first USL Championship season. The club finished its inaugural campaign with lessons to evaluate after facing the Players’ Shield winner in its final match.

Liam Fox, Ryan Edwards Reflect on First Season

Sporting JAX head coach Liam Fox said the club must reflect on the challenges of its first year in the USL Championship. He identified the season as an opportunity to learn before the club looks ahead. Fox said those lessons will help shape the team’s next steps.

“First years are always difficult in the Championship and new franchise, new people,” Fox said. “We’ve learnt a huge amount; it’s now time to reflect, look back, make sure we learn our lessons, and then we can start to look forward to next season with some optimism and off the back of these lessons we’ve learned.”

Fox also said Sporting JAX must improve in every phase of its play and in the evolution of the club. His assessment included the team’s work with and without possession. The comments followed the conclusion of the club’s inaugural USL Championship campaign.

“I think there’s loads of learnings to be taken from this full season, from our first day of preseason in January until now, which will stand us in good stead for next year,” Sporting JAX Head Coach Liam Fox said. “We have to be better in every aspect of the game, both with possession and without possession, and in the evolution of the club.”

Sporting JAX captain Ryan Edwards said the season did not produce the outcome the club wanted or expected. He also pointed to positive moments from the campaign and said the club can build from the experience. Edwards said Sporting JAX must return stronger and fight to be nearer the top of the table.

“It’s been obviously not the season we wanted or expected, but [there were] a couple of good moments in there,” Sporting JAX captain Ryan Edwards said. “Hopefully the club builds on it now and going forward and come back stronger next year and come back fighting and hopefully be at the right end of the table.”

FSB Take

Sporting JAX ended its inaugural USL Championship season with an early push against the Tampa Bay Rowdies but could not turn that pressure into a goal. McGuire’s 11th-minute save and the team’s opening-10-minute activity provided the clearest early moments before Tampa Bay scored twice. Fox’s comments identified improvement with and without possession, along with the broader evolution of Sporting JAX, as areas for the club to address after its first season.
