Juan Villavicencio earned four Baseball America honors after his 2026 season with the Clearwater Threshers, including Best Batting Prospect in Single-A. Baseball America also named the infielder the Best Defensive Shortstop, Best Infield Arm and Most Exciting Player. Villavicencio played shortstop, second base and third base in 70 games before his promotion to High-A Jersey Shore.
Baseball America released its 2026 Best Tools list at the end of August, with the Clearwater Threshers leading the Florida State League in Single-A selections. The list recognized several current and former Threshers at multiple levels of the minor leagues. The honors came as Clearwater continued its final homestand of the season.
Villavicencio leads Clearwater’s Single-A honors
Villavicencio hit 13 home runs and drove in 39 runs for the Threshers before his promotion. Robert Phelps also received a Single-A honor as Baseball America’s Best Defensive Second Baseman. Phelps, a 2025 Phillies 19th-round draft pick from NAIA Reinhardt, commonly served as Clearwater’s leadoff hitter at the start of the season.
Phelps posted a .400 on-base percentage before his promotion to Jersey Shore in early August, ranking among the top five in the Florida State League at the time. The Threshers led the league in fielding percentage and double plays in 2026. Villavicencio and Phelps were recognized as the best defensive shortstop and second baseman, respectively, in Single-A.
Aaron Barrett, former Threshers also recognized
Baseball America named Clearwater Threshers manager Aaron Barrett the best Low-A manager. Barrett led Clearwater to a top-two record in the Florida State League in 2026, and the Threshers were the only team in the league to finish the first half with at least 40 wins. Under Barrett, Clearwater clinched its third first-half championship in the last four seasons.
Gage Wood began the season with Clearwater before moving to Double-A Reading in May. He earned Pitcher of the Month honors within the Phillies’ farm system and made 15 starts for Reading after his promotion, striking out 84 batters in just under 60 Double-A innings. Baseball America named Wood’s fastball the best heater in the Eastern League.
Alex McFarlane, a 2023 Thresher who was with the Phillies’ bullpen, was named the Eastern League’s Best Reliever. Bryan Rincon earned Baseball America’s recognition for the Eastern League’s best strike zone judgment. Both players began the 2026 season in Double-A Reading.
John Spikerman, Ramón Márquez and Marty Gair also appeared among the honorees after playing for Clearwater in 2026. Spikerman was named the South Atlantic League’s best player for strike zone judgment after spending most of the season with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws, while Márquez earned recognition for the best changeup in Single-A. Gair was named the best reliever in Single-A.
Spikerman played for Clearwater during a July rehab assignment before being traded to the Mets. Márquez rose to the Phillies’ No. 4 prospect following his debut with the Threshers. Márquez and Gair were traded in the deal that brought Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants.
