Dallas Wilson addressed his Florida Gators teammates after their 38-19 loss to South Carolina, urging them to lift their spirits, turn the page and return to the fundamentals. The sophomore wide receiver asked to speak after head coach Jon Sumrall finished addressing the team. The defeat was Florida’s second straight loss.
“I felt like it was a good moment,” Wilson said this week. “I just said what my heart felt. That was it.”
Wilson leads Florida with 26 catches for 376 yards and three touchdowns at midseason. His production and personality have helped him emerge as a leader for the Gators, and junior linebacker Myles Graham said the message was needed.
“I loved it,” Graham said. “I think it was called for. I was locked in, and I was really proud of him. He has a lot of passion, a lot of energy, every single day, and it makes our team better. So that was something we needed in the moment, and I’m proud of him, and I appreciate him stepping up and saying what needed to be said.”
Wilson calls for a return to fundamentals
Wilson told the Gators to focus on their craft and the habits that helped them when things were going well. He also urged his teammates to be more intentional in their work, limit distractions and remain united as Florida moves through a difficult stretch.
“Just sticking to the basics,” Wilson said. “Sticking to basically going back to our craft, going back to the things we did when everything was going good. Be more intentional with what we’re doing when we’re working. Let’s cut all the small chatter and stuff. Let’s stay away from the media and things like that. We are a team. We gotta stick together. It’s the point of the season where people are looking for us to get torn apart.”
Jon Sumrall addresses Florida’s response
Sumrall said Florida’s response at halftime against South Carolina fell short of his standards. The Gators trailed 17-10 during a weather delay, and Sumrall said the team needed to recognize that it still had an opportunity to change the game.
“We’re down 17-10. I go into halftime, we’re in a weather delay, and I walk in the locker room. I look around, and I look at the guys, and man, you would have thought somebody’s dog died,” Sumrall said. “I’m like, ‘Boys, we’re down seven points, and we get the ball to (start the) half. We got a pulse. We got a chance,’ ” Sumrall said. “I think we’re having to help our guys overcome where we have to grow as a football team.”
Florida had Sunday off before returning to the facility, and Sumrall said the players came back with a better attitude. He said the team still had work to do but showed the right demeanor and mindset to begin the new week.
“It starts with me, leading the guys,” Sumrall said. “The guys were great this morning in meetings with corrections and taking ownership. And we’re trying to lay a foundation in how we want this to look moving forward. And we’ve got a lot of work to do. But guys have had the right demeanor, the right mindset as we started this new week.”
Florida Gators face Texas before Georgia
The Gators are scheduled to travel to face No. 7 Texas this week. Florida then has an open date before playing No. 1 Georgia in Atlanta.
That sequence gives Florida its next opportunity to apply the message Wilson delivered after the South Carolina loss. Sumrall said the team is focused on corrections, ownership and establishing how it wants to move forward.
FSB Take
Wilson’s message addressed the immediate challenge facing Florida: staying together after consecutive losses. Graham’s response showed that the wide receiver’s call for fundamentals and unity resonated with at least one of his teammates. With No. 7 Texas next, followed by an open date and No. 1 Georgia in Atlanta, Florida’s response will begin with the standards Wilson and Sumrall emphasized.
