Jonathon Long hit two home runs and drove in five runs as the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp defeated the Norfolk Tides 11-7 on Sept. 5, 2026, at Harbor Park in Norfolk, Va. Long’s solo home run in the top of the seventh inning extended Jacksonville’s lead to 9-7. He hit his second homer in the ninth inning after Matthew Etzel walked, setting the final score.
The performance marked Long’s fourth career multi-homer game and his first multi-homer game in his Marlins organizational career. His two home runs helped the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp complete a stretch of eight unanswered runs after Brandon Compton hit a second-inning home run. Jacksonville’s rally erased an early 3-0 Norfolk lead.
Jacksonville rallies after early deficit
Norfolk opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Jud Fabian walked and scored on Jeremiah Jackson’s two-run home run. Jose Barrero then singled to set up Luis Vasquez’s run-scoring triple, giving the Norfolk Tides a 3-0 lead. The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp answered in the second inning against Norfolk starter Cade Povich.
Brandon Compton’s home run began Jacksonville’s comeback, and Gage Miller followed with a two-run homer that scored Kemp Alderman and tied the game at 3-3. The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp took the lead in the third when Long singled home Juan Matheus, and Alderman’s fielder’s choice brought Etzel home. Jacksonville added three runs in the fourth, including a Brendan Jones double that scored Maximo Acosta, an Etzel groundout that scored Garret Forrester and Long’s RBI single that brought Jones home.
Norfolk cut Jacksonville’s lead to 8-7 in the bottom of the fourth. Bryan Ramos reached on a throwing error that allowed Creed Willems to score, and Sam Huff followed with a three-run home run after Ryan Noda walked. Long’s seventh-inning homer extended the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp’s advantage before his ninth-inning blast completed the scoring.
Pitching closes out Jacksonville win
Patrick Monteverde earned the win after pitching five innings with five strikeouts. Holt Jones followed with scoreless sixth and seventh innings to earn his second hold of the season. Wikelman Gonzalez pitched two shutout innings and earned his second save.
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp are the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins and compete in the International League. Jacksonville won the 2025 International League and Triple-A National Championships. The series concludes Sunday at 1:05 p.m., with Norfolk right-hander Trey Gibson scheduled to start against an expected Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp bullpen game.
