The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp secured a series split with a 4-3 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Sunday, Aug. 30, at VyStar Ballpark. Jacksonville overcame a 3-1 deficit during its season’s penultimate homestand. The win came in the teams’ International League matchup in Jacksonville, Fla.
Sixth-Inning Home Runs Put Jacksonville Ahead
Brendan Jones opened the sixth inning with a base hit before Matthew Etzel hit a game-tying home run. It was Etzel’s fourth home run of the week and 17th of the season. Three batters later, Graham Pauley hit a solo home run to right field, his seventh of the season, to give the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp the lead for good.
Garrett Forrester gave Jacksonville its first run with a solo home run in the third inning. Nashville opened the scoring in the first when Tyler Black scored on a play that also produced a double play after Ethan Murray reached on an infield single and Brock Wilken flied out to deep left field. The Sounds added another run in the second when Jacob Hurtubise walked, stole second and scored after an errant pickoff throw, then Jeferson Quero’s solo home run in the fourth made it 3-1.
Jacksonville Holds on in Ninth
Stephen Jones recorded the save for Jacksonville, his seventh of the season. Nashville threatened after Jones walked Jacob Hurtubise and Daniel Guilarte singled, with Guilarte then stealing second to put runners at second and third. Eduardo Garcia lined out to left fielder Jonathon Long, who threw out Guilarte at third base before Hurtubise could score the tying run.
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp begin a road trip Tuesday against the Norfolk Tides. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:20 p.m. on ESPN 690 and espn690.com. Jacksonville is the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins and competes in the International League.
