Sherman Johnson hit the first home run of his professional career, but the Daytona Tortugas lost 5-3 to the Palm Beach Cardinals on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

Johnson opened the game with a leadoff home run on a 2-2 pitch, giving Daytona a 1-0 lead before an out was recorded. Ichiro Cano followed with a single, and Arnaldo Lantigua was hit by a pitch before Rafhlmil Torres doubled to score Cano and extend the lead to 2-0.

Palm Beach answered with a run in the bottom of the first, but Daytona remained ahead until the sixth inning. The Tortugas added another run in the fifth without a hit when Yael Romero drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Drew Davies.

Palm Beach rallies in the sixth

The Cardinals scored three runs in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. Ryan Mitchell singled and advanced on a passed ball before Dee Kennedy singled, and Owen Henne followed with an RBI double to cut Daytona’s lead to 3-2.

Matthew Miura then singled home Kennedy to tie the game, and Gabe Camacho followed with an RBI single that scored Henne. Palm Beach added an insurance run in the eighth when J.P. Cabrera singled home Henne.

Daytona’s offense was held hitless after the second inning. Jesus Garcia retired all 10 batters he faced after entering in the sixth, including a perfect ninth, to finish the game.

Dusty Revis ties strikeout high

Dusty Revis worked five innings in relief, allowing three runs on eight hits without issuing a walk. He recorded six strikeouts, tying his career high for the third time this season and for the first time since July 1 at Bradenton.

Henry Hunter recorded his third multi-hit game of the season and tied his career high with two hits. Cano extended his on-base streak to 19 games, while Davies extended his streak to five games and Lantigua extended his to eight games.

The loss was Daytona’s third straight and dropped the Tortugas to 0-2 in September. Daytona fell to 57-70 overall and 36-25 in the second half, while Palm Beach took a 2-0 lead in the six-game series.

The Daytona Tortugas will continue the six-game series against the Palm Beach Cardinals on Sept. 3 at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
