Shelby Towkach has scored 30 points through six games as Edward Waters University Football’s regular extra-point kicker. Her production has established a new scoring standard for female HBCU football players, according to the source. Towkach is a member of the Tigers’ special teams unit during the 2026 season.

Towkach scored seven points in Edward Waters University’s 61-42 victory over nationally ranked Kentucky State University on Oct. 3. The win left Edward Waters University with a 5-1 overall record and a 4-0 mark in SIAC play. The team is averaging 42.3 points and 440.3 yards of total offense per game.

Towkach’s accomplishments add to the history of women in HBCU football. Jackson State University’s Leilani Armenta became the first woman to score in an HBCU football game in 2023. Towkach has since established her own scoring milestone with Edward Waters University Football.

Trust earned through preparation

Head coach Brian Jenkins said Towkach earned his confidence through her work ethic and her ability to deliver when given the opportunity. She participates alongside her teammates in the weight room, conditioning and other aspects of the football program. That preparation has supported her role as Edward Waters University’s regular extra-point kicker.

Towkach’s impact extends beyond her scoring totals. She maintains a 4.0 GPA while pursuing a degree in criminal justice, and she plans to attend law school with the goal of becoming an animal rights attorney, according to HBCU Gameday. She is also raising her three-year-old son while balancing academics and college athletics.

Edward Waters University Football continues its SIAC schedule at Benedict College on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. The Tigers will enter that game at 4-0 in conference play after the victory over Kentucky State University. Towkach’s production remains part of a season in which Edward Waters University is averaging more than 42 points per game.

FSB Take

Towkach’s 30 points give Edward Waters University Football a distinctive individual storyline inside a 5-1 start. Her regular extra-point role, 4.0 GPA and responsibilities as a mother make her season notable beyond the scoreboard. Her progress also places Edward Waters University within the continuing history of women who have scored in HBCU football.
