Lightning Look to Bounce Back Against Capitals in Home Opener

By Brian Hradsky

The Tampa Bay Lightning will look to put a difficult season opener behind them when they host the Washington Capitals on Saturday night at Benchmark International Arena.

Tampa Bay enters the matchup 0-1-0 after falling 5-1 to the New York Rangers on Thursday. Washington comes to Florida at 1-0-0 following a 5-2 road victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. The matchup gives the Lightning an immediate opportunity to respond in front of their home crowd against a Capitals team playing the second half of a back-to-back.

Lightning Look for a Response

Tampa Bay’s opener did not go according to plan.

The Lightning generated 33 shots against New York but managed only one goal. Nikita Kucherov provided Tampa Bay’s lone goal, while the Rangers scored five times and prevented the Lightning from generating enough sustained offensive pressure to make a comeback.

One game does not define a season, especially for a Tampa Bay roster that still features significant offensive talent.

Kucherov remains the centerpiece of the Lightning attack, while Brayden Point, Brandon Hagel, Jake Guentzel and Anthony Cirelli give Tampa Bay several legitimate scoring threats. The challenge Saturday will be turning that talent into sustained pressure against a Washington team that looked strong in its opener.

Tampa Bay should have one significant advantage: rest.

Washington played Friday night in Carolina and now has to travel to Tampa for another road game less than 24 hours later. The Lightning have been off since Thursday and should have fresher legs, particularly as the game progresses.

Kucherov Remains the Player to Watch

Washington knows exactly where its defensive attention needs to begin.

Kucherov scored Tampa Bay’s only goal against the Rangers and has consistently produced against the Capitals throughout his career. His vision, passing and shooting ability make him dangerous whenever he has possession, particularly on the power play.

The Lightning need more than Kucherov, however.

Point and Guentzel are capable of finishing scoring opportunities, while Hagel’s speed can create problems in transition. If Tampa Bay can establish multiple dangerous lines rather than relying heavily on its top players, Washington will have a much more difficult defensive assignment.

That becomes especially important against a Capitals team playing on consecutive nights.

Capitals Arrive With Momentum

Washington looked impressive Friday.

The Capitals defeated the defending Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes 5-2 behind a balanced offensive performance. Alex Tuch scored twice in his Washington debut, while Ryan Leonard, Jakob Chychrun and rookie defenseman Cole Hutson also scored.

Alex Ovechkin did not score but recorded an assist, demonstrating another potentially concerning aspect of this Washington roster.

The Capitals no longer need their longtime captain to provide nearly all of their offense.

Washington added Tuch, Jordan Kyrou and Boone Jenner during the offseason, giving head coach Spencer Carbery a deeper collection of forwards. Dylan Strome, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Tom Wilson, Aliaksei Protas and Leonard further strengthen that group.

Tampa Bay’s defense will need to account for scoring threats throughout Washington’s lineup.

Familiar Face Faces Washington

One of Saturday’s biggest storylines will come on Tampa Bay’s blue line.

John Carlson will face Washington after spending nearly his entire NHL career with the Capitals.

Carlson became one of the most accomplished defensemen in Washington history and played a major role in the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup championship. Now he gets an early opportunity to face his former organization as a member of the Lightning.

Carlson’s familiarity with Washington could also prove valuable.

He knows Ovechkin, Wilson and several other Capitals players extremely well. That does not guarantee Tampa Bay an advantage, but Carlson’s knowledge of Washington’s tendencies adds another interesting element to the matchup.

Lightning Need Vasilevskiy to Rebound

Andrei Vasilevskiy has produced too many elite performances throughout his career for one difficult game to create much concern.

Still, Tampa Bay needs its goaltender to respond Saturday.

Washington scored five times against Carolina and demonstrated that its offseason additions have already made the lineup more dangerous. Allowing the Capitals to establish an early lead could make Tampa Bay’s home opener much more difficult.

Vasilevskiy has historically performed well against Washington and went 1-0-1 with a .931 save percentage against the Capitals last season.

Tampa Bay also needs to help its goaltender by limiting traffic in front of the crease. Washington has several bigger forwards capable of creating screens, winning battles around the net and generating second-chance opportunities.

Take Advantage of Washington’s Back-to-Back

The Lightning should make Washington work from the opening faceoff.

Carolina forced the Capitals to play a physical, high-tempo game Friday night. Washington also spent considerable time killing penalties and relied heavily on Logan Thompson, who faced 33 shots.

Tampa Bay needs to make that workload matter.

Quick puck movement, an aggressive forecheck and sustained offensive-zone possessions could gradually wear down Washington. Even if the Capitals look fresh during the first period, the effects of playing on consecutive nights could become more noticeable during the second and third periods.

The Lightning cannot allow Washington to slow the game down and comfortably protect the middle of the ice.

Special Teams Could Decide the Game

Washington gave Carolina six power-play opportunities Friday.

The Hurricanes failed to make the Capitals pay enough for those mistakes, but Tampa Bay has the personnel to create a much different outcome.

Kucherov with additional space is dangerous enough by himself. Add Point, Guentzel and Tampa Bay’s other skilled forwards, and Washington cannot afford another parade to the penalty box.

For Tampa Bay, drawing penalties could become one of the most important elements of the game.

The Lightning also need to remain disciplined themselves. Washington scored a power-play goal through Chychrun on Friday and possesses enough offensive talent to punish unnecessary penalties.

Matchup to Watch: Lightning Speed vs. Washington’s Defense

Tampa Bay should try to attack Washington with speed.

The Capitals’ defense played well against Carolina, but the quick turnaround provides the Lightning with an opportunity to force Washington’s defensemen into extended shifts.

Hagel could be particularly important.

His ability to pressure defenders, attack through the neutral zone and create offense off turnovers makes him exactly the type of player who could take advantage of tired legs.

Tampa Bay should force Washington to defend the entire width of the ice rather than settling for low-percentage shots from the perimeter.

Keys to the Game

The Lightning need a fast start. This is Tampa Bay’s home opener, Washington played Friday night and the Capitals should not be allowed to settle comfortably into the game.

Tampa Bay also needs more scoring support around Kucherov. Washington’s lineup has enough depth that relying on one player to generate most of the offense could make this a difficult matchup.

The Lightning should also attack Washington’s discipline. The Capitals took six penalties against Carolina, and Tampa Bay needs to force Washington into similar situations while making those opportunities count.

Finally, Vasilevskiy needs to look more like the goaltender Tampa Bay has relied on for years. Washington has more offensive depth than it did previously, making Tampa Bay’s play around its own net especially important.

FSB Take

Thursday’s 5-1 loss was an ugly way for Tampa Bay to begin the season, but Saturday presents an ideal opportunity to erase some of that disappointment.

The Lightning are rested, playing their home opener and facing a Washington team that had to battle Carolina the previous night before traveling to Florida.

That advantage only matters if Tampa Bay uses it.

The Lightning need to push the pace immediately and make Washington feel the effects of playing on consecutive nights. Kucherov cannot be the only consistent offensive threat, and Tampa Bay needs Point, Hagel, Guentzel and the rest of its skilled forwards involved early.

Washington looked considerably deeper in its opener than it did a season ago. Tuch made an immediate impact, Leonard continues to develop and the Capitals received scoring throughout the lineup.

That makes this an excellent early test for Tampa Bay.

A strong response Saturday would quickly change the tone following Thursday’s disappointing opener and give the Lightning their first victory of the 2026-27 season.
