The Tampa Bay Lightning and Syracuse Crunch announced a four-year hockey affiliation extension July 15, 2026, keeping Tampa Bay prospects in Syracuse through the 2029-30 season. The Syracuse Crunch will begin the 2026-27 season as an American Hockey League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The teams completed their 14th year of affiliation in 2026. Since the partnership began in 2012, 104 players have appeared with both the Syracuse Crunch and Tampa Bay Lightning.

A productive 14-year affiliation

The Syracuse Crunch have won eight Calder Cup Playoff series during the affiliation and reached the Calder Cup Finals in 2013 and 2017. Syracuse qualified for the postseason in 10 of the 12 seasons in which playoffs were held during the partnership. Three of the Crunch’s four division championships also came while affiliated with Tampa Bay.

The Crunch posted a 520-331-81-58 record during the first 14 years of the affiliation. Syracuse and Tampa Bay also have the longest active streak in which both affiliated teams have clinched playoff berths, at eight seasons.

Dolgon, BriseBois address the extension

Syracuse Crunch Owner Howard Dolgon said the partnership has produced the strongest competitive period in franchise history.

“We are both honored and excited to extend our partnership with the Tampa Bay Lightning,” Dolgon said. “Over the past 14 seasons of this relationship, Crunch fans have been treated to the most competitive, highest quality of hockey in our franchise’s history. We look forward to more of the same.”

Tampa Bay Lightning Vice President and General Manager Julien BriseBois said the Syracuse organization provides a strong environment for player development.

“Our partnership with the Crunch has proven incredibly valuable, and we’re thrilled to extend our affiliation with them today,” BriseBois said. “Howard Dolgon and everyone in the organization have created a tremendous culture that benefits our players and supports their development at every level. We look forward to working together for another four seasons.”

Syracuse prepares for its 33rd season

The Syracuse Crunch will begin their 33rd year of operation in the 2026-27 season. The team has played home games at Upstate Medical University Arena at Onondaga County War Memorial since its inaugural 1994-95 season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the National Hockey League as an expansion franchise in 1992 and have won Stanley Cup championships in 2004, 2021 and 2022. From 2010 to 2018, the Lightning and their American Hockey League affiliate were run by Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman and Assistant General Manager Julien BriseBois. Tampa Bay named BriseBois its seventh vice president, general manager and alternate governor beginning with the 2018-19 season.

2026-27 season packages available

The 2026-27 season will be the first season covered by the extension. Ticket packages were on sale when the agreement was announced and were available through the Syracuse Crunch office, by phone and through Ticketmaster.

The agreement keeps the Tampa Bay Lightning and Syracuse Crunch connected through the 2029-30 season. It also extends a player-development relationship that has included 104 shared players, eight Calder Cup Playoff series victories and two Calder Cup Finals appearances.

FSB Take

The extension preserves an established American Hockey League development path for the Tampa Bay Lightning while keeping the Syracuse Crunch affiliated with the organization through 2029-30. The partnership enters its next phase after 14 completed seasons, two Calder Cup Finals appearances and an eight-season streak in which both teams secured playoff berths.
