The Miami Hurricanes football team held its second day of preseason camp Wednesday at the Greentree Practice fields in Coral Gables, Florida. Offensive lineman Matthew McCoy, defensive lineman Ahmad Moten Sr., defensive back Zechariah Poyser and wide receiver Malachi Toney spoke with reporters after practice about the team’s development.

McCoy said Miami’s offensive linemen have been working at different positions and taking camp day by day. He said cross-training helps players understand the entire offense, including what the tight ends and wide receivers are doing. McCoy also praised offensive lineman Samson Okunlola as a leader and said he was glad Okunlola was back with the group.

McCoy said the freshmen offensive linemen have improved since spring practice, with McCoy, Okunlola and Ryan Rodriguez helping lead the group. He described freshman offensive lineman Jackson Cantwell as smart, fast and strong. McCoy also said Cantwell asks questions, understands his assignments and shows confidence.

Moten said he was limited during spring practice after Miami lost the national championship game. He used that time to watch film with the coaches and evaluate the team, including younger players who stepped into larger roles. Moten said he believes Miami has players who can help the team win.

Moten also discussed competing against Miami running back Mark Fletcher Jr. in practice. He said the matchup is difficult and called Fletcher the best running back in the country. Moten added that the competition is taken seriously, while describing Fletcher as his brother.

Poyser said communication among Miami’s defensive backs has improved through film study and time spent together. He credited Jakobe Thomas and Keionte Scott with teaching him and said he is trying to help younger players. Poyser also praised Toney’s blocking and route running, saying the competition helps make the defensive backs better.

Poyser said Miami’s offensive talent and depth give him confidence about the upcoming season. Toney praised the defensive back room and said competing against those players helps the offense. Toney also said he feels more prepared entering preseason camp as a sophomore because he has experience from the previous season.

Toney said his mother has been important to his community outreach efforts. He also said he advises younger fans to stay the course and believe in God. Miami is scheduled to open its season Sept. 4 at Stanford.
