Barry University women’s soccer sophomore keeper Marlen Hernandez earned the Sunshine State Conference women’s soccer defensive player of the week honor for Aug. 31 through Sept. 6. The award, announced Sept. 8, is Hernandez’s first of the season and the third of her career.

Hernandez recorded three consecutive shutouts as Barry University defeated Southern Wesleyan 2-0, Spartanburg Methodist 2-0 and Middle Georgia State 5-0. She made a season-high nine saves against Southern Wesleyan, the most by any player in the conference that year. Hernandez faced one shot on goal against Spartanburg Methodist and one against Middle Georgia State.

Marlen Hernandez leads Sunshine State Conference in key goalkeeper categories

The shutouts extended Hernandez’s scoreless streak to 450 minutes during the season and 472 minutes dating to the previous season. She led the Sunshine State Conference in goals-against average and save percentage. Barry University entered its next outing with a 5-0-0 record and was scheduled to face the Ave Maria Gyrenes on Friday, Sept. 11.
