Florida International University men’s soccer fell 1-0 to St. John’s (NY) on Sept. 6 at Belson Stadium in Queens, New York. FIU held a 10-7 advantage in shots but could not overcome a second-half penalty kick. FIU is 2-2-1 this season.
The match was scoreless at halftime, with FIU holding a 5-3 edge in shots. St. John’s (NY) broke the deadlock in the 59th minute after a foul in the box by Alfonso Gilleard-Soriano led to a penalty kick. Xavi Abeijon scored the match-winning goal from the spot.
Jad Benjelloun, Sergio Perello, Martin Piedeleu and Santi Possu each recorded two shots for FIU. Finn Bauens and Alfonso Gilleard-Soriano played all 90 minutes. Nigel Van Haveren made three saves, matching his season high.
The match marked the 30th anniversary of the teams’ 1996 National Championship appearance. FIU men’s soccer will play at Missouri State on Friday, Sept. 11, in American Conference action. The match is scheduled for 8 p.m. and will stream live on ESPN+.
