The Pensacola Blue Wahoos set a franchise single-season home run record Saturday night with a 5-2 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits in Montgomery, Ala. The win was Pensacola’s third consecutive victory and 17th in its past 20 games. It also lowered the Blue Wahoos’ magic number to six.
Brandon Compton and Ethan O’Donnell hit solo home runs in the second inning against Montgomery starter Marcus Johnson. Compton’s home run was his 21st Double-A homer of the season, the fifth-highest single-season total in Pensacola Blue Wahoos history. The total left him three home runs short of Griffin Conine’s franchise record of 24, set in 2022.
O’Donnell’s home run was the Blue Wahoos’ 164th of the season, surpassing the 2023 club for the most in franchise history. Aiva Arquette added a sacrifice fly in the third inning and an RBI single in the fifth against Montgomery reliever K.C. Hunt. Juan Matheus followed with a sacrifice fly for Pensacola’s fifth and final run.
Jacob Kisting, bullpen limit Biscuits
Jacob Kisting earned the win in his fourth start for the Blue Wahoos and improved to 3-0. He allowed two runs, one earned, over 5.0-plus innings and worked into the sixth inning for the first time since being acquired from the Rays organization in a deadline trade.
Will Simpson hit a solo home run for Montgomery in the fourth inning. Gabe Bierman, Alex Williams and Jack Sellinger combined for 4.0 hitless innings of relief. Sellinger earned his eighth save.
Pensacola Blue Wahoos strengthen South Division position
Pensacola improved to 18-6 with one game remaining in August. The Blue Wahoos secured the best winning percentage in a full month in franchise history, surpassing the 19-10 mark from July 2018.
Pensacola leads the Columbus Clingstones by 8.5 games in the second-half South Division race with 13 regular-season games remaining. The Blue Wahoos’ magic number to clinch a playoff spot is six.
