Daniela Fernandez Junquera won all three of her singles matches as Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s women’s tennis team completed its second home tournament of the fall season Sunday at the Crotty Tennis Complex in Daytona Beach.
The three-day tournament featured players from Embry-Riddle, Flagler, Florida Southern, Saint Leo and Tampa. Despite weather challenges, the event completed four rounds of doubles and four rounds of singles play.
Fernandez Junquera leads singles results
Fernandez Junquera won two of her three singles matches in straight sets. She defeated Flagler’s Sofia Balsera in three sets Friday, then beat Tampa’s Rebecca Presley in two sets Saturday before closing the tournament with a straight-set victory over Saint Leo’s Gabriela Almanza on Sunday.
Jessica Plazas and Laura Cuesta Bret each recorded two singles wins. Plazas defeated Saint Leo’s Sofia Hadab in three sets Saturday and Tampa’s Rebecca Presley in straight sets Sunday, while Cuesta Bret earned victories over Saint Leo’s Isabella Temenugov and Tampa’s Karine Kulidjian.
Two doubles pairs finish unbeaten
Benedetta Sensi and Fernandez Junquera finished 3-0 in doubles. The pair dropped seven games across its three matches.
Plazas and Ayla Villagomez also went 3-0 in doubles, surrendering seven games across three matches. The results gave Embry-Riddle two unbeaten doubles pairs at its home tournament.
Embry-Riddle scheduled for Stetson Invitational
Embry-Riddle is scheduled to return to competition Oct. 30 at the Stetson Invitational in Deland. The event will follow a tournament in which Fernandez Junquera went unbeaten in singles and two Eagles pairs posted perfect doubles records.
FSB Take
Embry-Riddle’s strongest verified results came in both areas of the tournament. Fernandez Junquera’s 3-0 singles performance and the matching 3-0 doubles records of the Sensi-Fernandez Junquera and Plazas-Villagomez pairs give the Eagles three successful entries to carry into the scheduled Stetson Invitational.
