Cam Cannarella collected three hits as the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp defeated the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 9-6 Wednesday at PNC Field in Moosic, Pa.
Jacksonville recorded 13 hits, with five players finishing with multi-hit games. The Jumbo Shrimp opened with three runs in the first inning, regained the lead after Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tied the game in the sixth and added three runs in the eighth.
Jacksonville Takes Early Lead
Jacksonville opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning. Cam Cannarella singled and advanced to third on Johnny Long’s single and an error before Matthew Etzel walked to load the bases. Brayden Taylor followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Cannarella, and Juan Matheus delivered a two-run double to bring home Long and Etzel.
The RailRiders answered with a run in the bottom of the first when Jasson Dominguez hit a solo home run. Jacksonville added two runs in the second inning after Brendan Jones singled and Brandon Compton reached on catcher’s interference. Cannarella then hit a ground-rule double to score Jones, and Long followed with an RBI single for a 5-1 lead.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre trimmed the deficit in the third and fourth innings. Dominguez was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on JC Escarra’s single before Marco Luciano hit a sacrifice fly. Kenedy Corona doubled in the fourth and scored on an RBI single by Dominguez, cutting Jacksonville’s lead to 5-3.
Jumbo Shrimp Answer Sixth-Inning Rally
The RailRiders tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth. Abraham Gutierrez singled, and Jarred Kelenic followed with a game-tying two-run home run.
Jacksonville reclaimed the lead in the seventh inning. Cannarella opened the frame with a double and scored on Taylor’s double, putting the Jumbo Shrimp ahead 6-5.
The Jumbo Shrimp added three runs in the eighth. Bennett Hostetler doubled and scored on Taylor’s base hit, while Brandon Compton doubled home Brendan Jones. Cannarella’s groundout moved Compton to third, and Compton scored on Johnny Long’s groundout to make it 9-5.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre mounted one final threat in the ninth when Dominguez and JC Escarra singled to begin the inning. Luciano drove in Dominguez with an RBI single, but Stephen Jones induced a double play and a flyball to finish the 9-6 victory.
Jacksonville entered the game with a 72-72 overall record and a 30-40 International League record. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre entered at 75-67 overall and 39-30 in league play. The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp are the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins.
