Central Florida football produced decisive shutouts and close finishes in the latest round of reported results. Bishop Moore beat Winter Springs 52-0 on Oct. 9, while Edgewater defeated Olympia 34-0 on Oct. 7. Apopka, Seminole, Lake Wales, Lakeland and Osceola also recorded victories. This roundup includes results from Oct. 2 through Oct. 9, with the dates identified below.

Bishop Moore and Edgewater set the pace

Bishop Moore’s 52-0 victory over Winter Springs combined a productive offense with a shutout. MaxPreps lists 326 passing yards and 254 rushing yards for the Hornets in that game. Edgewater’s 34-0 win over Olympia supplied another strong defensive result in Orange County. Those score lines give both programs useful examples of controlling a game on both sides of the ball.

Apopka and Lake Highland Prep find a way

Apopka defeated Lake Brantley 21-15 on Oct. 9. The Blue Darters trailed 15-13 at halftime before scoring eight unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Lake Highland Prep’s latest completed result listed in its schedule was a 35-19 road win over Bishop Snyder on Oct. 2. That gave the Highlanders a positive result to build on during the October portion of their season.

Seminole edges Lake Mary as Mainland wins on the road

Seminole (Sanford) held off Lake Mary 21-19 on Oct. 9. Tyree Howard contributed 115 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, along with 113 receiving yards, according to MaxPreps. Mainland won 35-14 at Spruce Creek that night, with the listed quarter scores showing a 14-point fourth quarter for the Buccaneers. Lake Mary and Mainland are listed to meet on Oct. 16, while Seminole’s next listed game is at Spruce Creek on Oct. 15.

Polk and Osceola programs add victories

Lake Wales defeated Jones 28-6 on Oct. 9. Lakeland won 38-3 at Sebring after holding the Blue Streaks scoreless over the final three quarters. Osceola (Kissimmee) earned an 18-16 victory over Auburndale in another tight finish. The combination of comfortable wins and narrow decisions shows how differently teams can reach the same result during the late-season stretch.

The First Academy and Cocoa win before next tests

The First Academy defeated Archbishop McCarthy 31-24 on Oct. 9. The Royals’ next listed opponent is West Boca Raton on Oct. 16. Cocoa shut out Centennial 47-0 on Oct. 9 and is listed to visit Space Coast on Oct. 16. Both teams have an opportunity to carry a winning performance into their next game.

FSB Take

The shutouts stand out, but the close finishes deserve just as much attention. Apopka, Seminole and Osceola each had to protect a small margin to secure a win. That kind of execution can become especially valuable as the season advances. I would watch whether the teams that won comfortably can maintain their standards and whether the teams that won narrowly can create more room for error next time.
