Queens (NC) scored in the 61st minute and held on for a 1-0 victory over Stetson University Men’s Soccer on Saturday at the Stetson Athletic Training Center in DeLand. Rodrigo Canovas scored the game’s only goal on an assist from Luis Vera Mayorca. The loss ended Stetson’s two-match winning streak and moved the team to 2-5-1 overall and 1-2-0 in ASUN play.
Stetson finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots and put four attempts on goal, while Queens recorded one shot on target. Stetson also earned eight corner kicks. Queens improved to 2-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.
Stetson Pressures Queens Early
Stetson outshot Queens 6-1 during a scoreless first half and created several chances in front of goalkeeper Matthew Bademian. Bademian made four first-half saves to keep Queens level. Junior Essengue recorded Stetson’s first shot on goal in the 11th minute, while Matthew Perez tested Bademian twice and Israel Daniels also put an attempt on frame.
Canovas Delivers Decisive Goal
Queens broke the deadlock in the 61st minute when Canovas scored with Vera Mayorca providing the assist. Stetson nearly responded less than a minute later when Daniele Mastroianni hit the left post. The match remained 1-0 as Stetson continued to search for an equalizer.
Stetson generated one final push in the closing seconds. Andre Casas recorded two shots in the final minute, and Zsombor Pall had an attempt blocked by a Queens defender with one second remaining. The effort ended with Queens preserving the shutout.
Stetson Returns Home Against UCF
Matthew Perez led Stetson with four shots, including two on goal. Andre Casas and Zsombor Pall each finished with two shots, while Junior Essengue and Israel Daniels also recorded shots on target. Murillo Mello played all 90 minutes in goal for Stetson.
Stetson University Men’s Soccer will host UCF on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand. The match is the next contest on Stetson’s schedule after the ASUN loss to Queens. Stetson will enter the match with a 2-5-1 overall record and a 1-2-0 conference mark.

Stetson created the larger share of the chances, outshooting Queens 12-5 and earning eight corner kicks, but Canovas’ second-half goal decided the match. The Hatters also limited Queens to one shot on goal. Stetson now has a quick opportunity to respond when UCF visits DeLand on Tuesday.
