Bethune-Cookman will play Southern (La.) at 3 p.m. EST Saturday, Nov. 7, at A.W. Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in its final road contest of the 2026 season. The Wildcats entered the game second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division at 3-2 in league play, with three regular-season games remaining. The game will stream on SWAC TV, with live statistics available through Southern athletics.

Bethune-Cookman seeks response after Arkansas – Pine Bluff loss

Bethune-Cookman is coming off a 63-21 loss to Arkansas – Pine Bluff at Simmons Bank Field. The Wildcats committed a season-high five interceptions in that game as Arkansas – Pine Bluff built a lead Bethune-Cookman could not overcome. The result increased the importance of the Wildcats’ final three regular-season games.

Bethune-Cookman has reached the SWAC Championship Game conversation later in a season than in any year since joining the conference, according to the source. Alabama A&M entered the weekend at 3-1 in league play, while Jackson State also remained in the East Division picture. Bethune-Cookman is scheduled to host Grambling State on Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. and Florida A&M on Nov. 21 at 3:30 p.m. after Saturday’s game.

Rushing attack meets Southern defense

Bethune-Cookman’s strongest statistical advantage comes on the ground. The Wildcats averaged 214.8 rushing yards per game, ranking eighth nationally at the Football Championship Subdivision level according to the source, and recorded at least 100 rushing yards in each of their first nine games. Rashon Brown has nine rushing touchdowns in 2026, ranking first in the SWAC and 15th in the FCS.

Southern entered at 4-5 overall and 2-3 in SWAC play, one game out of first place in the SWAC West Division. The Southern Jaguars ranked seventh in the conference in yards per game and sixth in yards allowed per game, while allowing more than 200 rushing yards per game and more than five yards per carry. Southern was coming off a victory over Florida A&M in Tallahassee.

Trey Holly led the SWAC with 1,078 rushing yards and nine touchdowns entering the matchup. He had 204 yards and four total touchdowns against Florida A&M, while junior Christian Johnson completed 7 of 9 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown in that game. Southern quarterbacks had thrown three interceptions during the season.

Pressure and ball security remain key

Bethune-Cookman was 5-0 in games when it recorded at least three sacks as a team and ranked 10th nationally at 2.67 sacks per game. The Wildcats were also 5-0 when Isaiah Washburn recorded at least one sack. Southern’s defense was led by Tayton James, who had 60 tackles, four sacks and one interception.

Bethune-Cookman must also avoid another turnover-heavy performance after throwing five interceptions against Arkansas – Pine Bluff. Southern had averaged the fewest penalty yards per game in the SWAC, adding another discipline-related challenge for the Wildcats. Naim Lassiter, a Bethune-Cookman safety, was named a semifinalist for the Aeneas Williams Award after appearing on the award’s preseason watch list.

Road history adds to the challenge

Bethune-Cookman had won four road games since joining the SWAC in 2021, including three at Mississippi Valley State and one at Grambling State in 2021. The Wildcats had never defeated Southern on the road in the series. Bethune-Cookman defeated Southern for the first time last season after opening the all-time series 0-7.

Special teams provide another area to monitor in Baton Rouge. Since replacing Ryder Goodwin as the placekicker, Aiden Lanier had made all five of his field-goal attempts, including a long of 33 yards, and all nine extra-point attempts. Punter Isaac Gallagher-Cheetham ranked third in the FCS with 56 punts and seventh with 2,196 total punting yards.

Bethune-Cookman had not had a 100-yard receiver in 17 consecutive games dating to the previous season. The Wildcats’ rushing production, defensive pressure and special teams therefore entered the matchup as important components of the game plan. A victory would give Bethune-Cookman its first road win over Southern while keeping the Wildcats in the SWAC East race.

FSB Take

Bethune-Cookman enters its final road game with a clear matchup advantage on the ground against a Southern defense that has allowed more than 200 rushing yards per game. The Wildcats must pair that strength with better ball security after the five-interception loss to Arkansas – Pine Bluff. How Bethune-Cookman handles those two areas will directly affect its position entering the final two regular-season games against Grambling State and Florida A&M.
