Santa Fe College’s women’s basketball program hosted its second annual Coaches Clinic, Open Practice and Unofficial Recruits and Parents Day Saturday morning at the Santa Fe College Gymnasium in Gainesville. Coaches and players from across Florida attended the event. The gathering brought coaches, prospective student-athletes and families to campus ahead of the program’s season opener.

The practice emphasized rebounding, communication, passing, playing in transition, offensive sets and transition defense. Athletic Director Chanda Stebbins and Santa Fe men’s basketball Head Coach John Ritzdorf also addressed attendees. The session provided an on-court look at the areas Santa Fe women’s basketball is emphasizing before competition begins.

Practice and campus experience

Prospective student-athletes and their families received a campus tour during the event. They also participated in a question-and-answer session with current Santa Fe women’s basketball players. The activities connected the practice with an opportunity to learn more about Santa Fe College and the program.

“It was great to open the doors of our program and institution to high school coaches, student-athletes, and parents from our local communities throughout the state of Florida and from out of state,” notes Lowery. “We believe it is important to make it an educational experience so that all who visit our campus and observe our program know what Santa Fe College is about and why we value what we do.” David Lowery is the head coach of Santa Fe women’s basketball.

Santa Fe’s opening schedule

Santa Fe women’s basketball is scheduled to open its season against Catawba Valley Community College on Oct. 31 at 5:30 p.m. in Jacksonville. The program is scheduled to play Trinity Valley Community College on Nov. 1 at 11:30 a.m., also in Jacksonville. Santa Fe women’s basketball is then scheduled to host Edward Waters on Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. in the Santa Fe College Gymnasium.

The Edward Waters game is scheduled to be Santa Fe women’s basketball’s home opener. The three early-season dates give the program two games in Jacksonville before its first scheduled home game. The schedule was part of the context surrounding the open practice and clinic.

FSB Take

The event gave Santa Fe women’s basketball a direct way to present its practice priorities while welcoming coaches, prospective student-athletes and families to campus. The combination of instruction, campus access and player interaction made the morning broader than an on-court workout. Santa Fe’s next scheduled opportunities to apply those priorities will come against Catawba Valley Community College and Trinity Valley Community College before the home opener against Edward Waters.
