Miami Marlins right-handed pitcher Anthony Bender is scheduled to join the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Tuesday for an injury rehabilitation assignment.
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp are scheduled to play the Memphis Redbirds at 7:45 p.m. ET at AutoZone Park in Memphis. Bender was placed on the injured list June 30 with a right shin stress reaction.
Before the injury, Bender appeared in 35 games for Miami and went 1-1 with a 2.62 ERA. He pitched 34.1 innings, allowing 21 hits and 12 walks while striking out 41.
Anthony Bender’s career background
Bender, 31, is from Petaluma, California, and was originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 20th round of the 2016 draft out of Santa Rosa Junior College. He reached High-A Wilmington in the Royals organization before being released during spring training in 2019.
Bender later pitched for independent Sioux City of the American Association before signing a minor league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. During the 2019 season, he pitched for Low-A Wisconsin, High-A Carolina and Double-A Biloxi.
Bender signed a minor league deal with the Miami Marlins on Nov. 30, 2020. He made his major league debut for Miami on May 5, 2021, pitching a scoreless inning of relief against Arizona.
During his rookie season, Bender appeared in 60 games and recorded a 2.79 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 61.1 innings. Across five major league seasons, he has appeared in 227 games, including one start, with a 2.97 ERA and 230 strikeouts in 218.0 innings while allowing 165 hits.
Bender is the 10th Miami Marlins player to join Jacksonville on a rehabilitation assignment this season. The previous players were Kyle Stowers, Maximo Acosta, Esteury Ruiz, Christopher Morel, Griffin Conine, Eury Perez, Janson Junk, Josh Ekness and Owen Caissie.
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp are the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins and compete in the International League. Jacksonville won the 2025 International League and Triple-A National Championships and plays its home games at VyStar Ballpark.
