South Florida junior kicker Nico Gramatica earned the American Conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week honor after making all four of his field-goal attempts in South Florida football’s 19-9 season-opening win over Florida International on Sept. 5 in Tampa, Fla. The award was announced Sept. 7. Gramatica’s four made field goals were a career high.
Gramatica scored 13 of South Florida’s 19 points and connected from 37, 53, 30 and 29 yards. His 53-yard kick was his sixth career field goal from 50-plus yards, establishing a South Florida program record. The performance also tied his previous career high for points scored.
Gramatica extends field-goal streak
The performance extended Gramatica’s made-field-goal streak to 11, the fourth-longest in South Florida program history. He also made his only extra-point attempt and handled all six South Florida kickoffs, with five resulting in touchbacks. Gramatica entered his junior season as a preseason Lou Groza Award Watch List honoree.
Gramatica set South Florida’s single-season record for extra points made with 59 in the previous season. South Florida was 1-0 after the victory and will play at Army in its American Conference opener next Saturday.
