The University of South Florida men’s soccer team lost to UTRGV 5-0 on Sept. 6 in Tampa, Fla., in the first-ever matchup between the programs. The loss dropped South Florida to 1-4-0, while UTRGV improved to 2-0-1. South Florida is 0-1-0 all time against UTRGV.
UTRGV Scores Early and Pulls Away
UTRGV scored 24 seconds into the match and finished with a 15-9 advantage in shots. The Vaqueros also led 8-1 in shots on goal. Elias Taj scored two goals and recorded two assists for UTRGV.
Eduardo De Oliveira, Sammy Jadid and Mouhamed Pouye also scored for UTRGV. De Oliveira recorded one assist, while Malang Mandiang had two assists. Victor van der Aa recorded one assist.
South Florida Plays a Man Down
South Florida played the remainder of the match with 10 players after Geoffrey Oyaka received a second yellow card and a red card in the 30th minute. Pedro Faife received a yellow card in the 44th minute. Auby Jakob recorded two shots and one shot on goal, while Harris Micah, Sanchez Diego and Richardson Tyler each had one shot.
Eric Axtman made his first start in goal for South Florida and played all 90 minutes. He made three saves in the loss. The start marked Axtman’s first in goal for South Florida.
South Florida’s Next Match
South Florida is scheduled to play at UAB in Birmingham, Alabama, on Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. ET. The match will be streamed on ESPN+. It will be South Florida’s next opportunity to return to the win column.
