Alec Rothe recorded 10 kills and five blocks as the No. 17 Florida Gators women’s volleyball team swept North Texas 3-0 on Sunday at The Super Pit in Denton, Texas. Florida won 25-17, 28-26 and 25-16 to improve to 2-0 in the series history against North Texas.
Florida held North Texas to .038 hitting for the match and finished with 12 total team blocks. Jordyn Byrd and Aniya Madkin added four blocks each, while the Gators held advantages in kills, 44-26, and digs, 47-32.
Rothe hit .538 and led Florida offensively. Selena Leban finished with seven kills, Kamryn Chaney added six and Taylor Parks recorded 30 assists and a career-high five kills.
Florida controls defensive battle
Florida had three players record at least 10 digs. Lily Hayes led the Gators with 12 digs, while Leban and Parks each finished with 10.
North Texas was led by Jahniya Jackson, who had nine kills and six digs. Alessandra Romo added 14 digs, and the attendance of 2,377 set a North Texas volleyball record.
The result was Florida’s third nonconference sweep, and the Gators held an opponent below .100 hitting for the third time this season. Florida also posted its highest kill total in a three-set match this season with 44.
Florida prepares for Miami matchup
Florida will host Miami on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 8 p.m. ET in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center for the ACC-SEC Challenge. The match will air on SEC Network.
Florida head coach Ryan Theis said the team’s performance reflected its depth after a demanding week.
“I think it’s an example of our depth. I’ve said several times, I wish we could play teams 12-on-12 because I think we’ve got a lot of depth this year, and you saw that today. We went to Kira [Hutson] and Amaya [Thomas] in the middle of two, Aniya [Madkin] in the third, and were still able to get out of here 3-0 after an extremely challenging week. We’re ready to go home.”
Theis also encouraged fans to attend Wednesday’s match.
“I’d love it if we could pack the Dome. Let’s fill it up!”
