The National Football League has officially discontinued the Pro Bowl game and all associated competitions, shifting the event to a purely honorary selection without in-game festivities. The move was announced on August 26, 2026, by Troy Vincent, NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations, who cited player feedback valuing the distinction of selection over participation in a game.
“This direction came directly from our continued conversations with players and what they value most about the Pro Bowl,” Vincent said. “Being selected by your peers, coaches and fans as one of the very best at your position carries tremendous meaning. We heard clearly that the distinction matters, and our focus is on making the recognition that comes with it worthy of what these players accomplished on the field.” The Pro Bowl voting process remains unchanged, with fans, players and coaches determining 44-man rosters per conference, but no game or replacements will follow selections.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had two players chosen for the 2025 Pro Bowl—tackle Tristan Wirfs on his fifth consecutive selection and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. on his second—have moved into the 2026 preseason under this new Pro Bowl structure.
On August 12, 2026, the Buccaneers opened their preseason campaign with a 17-13 victory over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. Rookie outside linebacker Jack Pyburn stood out by recording two sacks, contributing to the team’s defensive efforts. Cornerback Ayden Garnes also made a significant impact by scoring a 47-yard interception return touchdown.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield, entering his fourth season with Tampa Bay, is scheduled to make his 2026 preseason debut in the Buccaneers’ final preseason game on August 26 against the Chicago Bears at Raymond James Stadium.
