Miami Dolphins Defensive Coordinator Sean Duggan Discusses Player Development and Defensive Strategy Ahead of Preseason Game vs. Atlanta Falcons

August 27, 2026 ·

Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Sean Duggan provided a detailed update on the team’s defensive preparations during his media availability on August 26, 2026. Duggan emphasized steady improvement across the defense as the unit prepares for their preseason matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

On the status of linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, who did not practice that day, Duggan deferred all playing time decisions to head coach Jeff Hafley. “Whatever [Coach Hafley] decides is the best interest of the team is what we’ll do,” he said. Duggan noted Rodriguez’s increased understanding of defensive calls and anticipation, crediting his growth to better comprehension of run and coverage responsibilities.

Regarding the upcoming game, Duggan said the Dolphins will not alter their approach based on whether Atlanta plays their starters. He described preseason games mainly as evaluation opportunities to allow players to develop against various competition levels. “We’re just trying to become a more consistent defense,” Duggan added.

On the defensive front seven, Duggan praised the group’s talent and physicality but avoided setting a ceiling on their potential. “Not necessarily a set ceiling, or we could be this or we should be this. We need to see steady improvement every single day,” he said.

Several individual performance updates included Chris Johnson showing improved technique and instincts, described as having “a feel for the game.” Defensive lineman Khaled “Chop” Muhammed has made notable progress in edge setting and pass rushing through dedication on and off the field, making him an every-down player. Duggan highlighted the coaching staff’s demand for versatility from him, expecting contributions in run defense and pass rush.

Linebacker/safety Kyle Louis was credited for his versatility across multiple roles, including linebacker, safety, and big nickel safety, showcasing instincts, passion, and physicality. Duggan acknowledged the challenges of positional transitions, emphasizing the importance of reps and learning from both successes and mistakes.

With veteran defensive lineman Zach Sieler sidelined by injury, other players have stepped forward with increased communication responsibilities and rep opportunities in the front. Duggan noted that team communication between himself upstairs and Coach Hafley on the field has been effective and continuously improving.

Additional defensive backs like safety Michael Taaffe have improved their scheme understanding, communication, and decision-making during training camp. Defensive player Keith Cooper Jr. has made significant advancement in his technique, confidence, quickness, and playmaking ability, exhibiting faster and more confident play.

Highlighting linebacker depth, Duggan praised the trio of Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson, and Jacob Rodriguez as valuable assets to the defense, emphasizing the importance of depth at the position to maintain a high level of play.
