The Tampa Bay Lightning signed defenseman John Carlson to a two-year contract worth an average annual value of $8.5 million, vice president and general manager Julien BriseBois announced July 2, 2026. Carlson joins Tampa Bay after appearing in 1,159 career National Hockey League games with the Washington Capitals and Anaheim Ducks. Carlson played 55 games with Washington during the 2025-26 season, recording 10 goals, 46 points and a plus-11 rating. The Capitals traded him to the Anaheim Ducks on March 5, 2026, for a conditional first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. Carlson then recorded four goals and 14 points in 16 games with Anaheim.
