Florida Atlantic Owls women’s volleyball fell to the FGCU Eagles in four sets Thursday at Alico Arena in Fort Myers, Fla., losing 3-1 in the Sunshine State Classic opener. The set scores were 20-25, 25-27, 25-18 and 19-25 from Florida Atlantic’s perspective. Florida Atlantic fell to 3-1 on the season, while FGCU improved to 2-2.
Luye Marquez-Moreno records first double-double
Luye Marquez-Moreno led Florida Atlantic with 12 kills and 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. She also contributed two assists and one block. Natalie Depaula added nine kills and led the Owls with a .304 hitting percentage.
Maya Van Heyst recorded her second double-double of the season with 25 assists and 10 digs. Maggie Allred led Florida Atlantic with four blocks, while Sara Gamboa contributed seven kills and two blocks. Anna Hartman finished with five kills.
Florida Atlantic won the third set 25-18 after opening the frame with a 10-4 run and building a 19-12 advantage. The Owls cut the match deficit to 2-1, but FGCU secured the fourth set 25-19 to close out the match. Florida Atlantic will now turn to its final contest in Fort Myers.
Florida Atlantic faces West Virginia next
Florida Atlantic will face West Virginia at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at Alico Arena. The match will close out the Owls’ play in Fort Myers. It is Florida Atlantic’s next contest in the Sunshine State Classic.
