Florida Atlantic volleyball fell to the West Virginia Mountaineers 3-2 on Friday, Sept. 4, at FGCU’s Alico Arena in Fort Myers. West Virginia won 25-22, 16-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-10 to improve to 2-1, while Florida Atlantic dropped to 3-2. Florida Atlantic won the second and fourth sets, but West Virginia claimed the opening, third and deciding fifth sets.
Florida Atlantic opened the fifth set facing a 6-1 deficit. Olivia Hart’s fifth kill of the match helped trim the margin to 8-5 at the side switch, and the Owls later pulled within two points at 12-10. West Virginia scored the final three points to close out the set and the match.
Florida Atlantic statistical leaders
Hartman led Florida Atlantic offensively with nine kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Olivia Hart recorded her second double-double of the season with a match-leading 16 digs and eight kills, and her three service aces also led all players. Maya Van Heyst led Florida Atlantic with 41 assists while adding nine digs and seven kills.
Bre Morgan led the Florida Atlantic block with a season-high six blocks, including two solo blocks. Florida Atlantic held team advantages in kills, 56-54; service aces, 11-5; digs, 69-61; and attack attempts, 165-159. Maya Van Heyst was named to the Sunshine State Classic All-Tournament Team.
Florida Atlantic’s next match
Florida Atlantic will play host Florida on Friday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. ET in the Florida Invite. The match is scheduled for the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in Gainesville, Florida.
