Juan Matheus drove in two runs as the Pensacola Blue Wahoos rallied for a 5-3 comeback win over the Montgomery Biscuits on Friday night, Aug. 28, in Montgomery, Ala. Matheus tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the third inning and gave Pensacola its first lead with a double in the seventh.
Montgomery scored three runs against Orlando Ortiz-Mayr, who pitched four innings. Theo Gillen hit a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the third to put the Biscuits ahead 2-1, and Connor Hujsak scored on a Kamren James groundout in the fourth to make it 3-1.
Pensacola Blue Wahoos Complete Four-Inning Rally
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos began their comeback in the fifth inning with a double steal. Aiva Arquette took second as Adrian Santana stole home, cutting Montgomery’s lead to 3-2. The steal of home was the 11th in Pensacola Blue Wahoos franchise history.
Cristian Hernandez then recorded his 27th double and 30th steal of the season before Ethan O’Donnell tied the game with a single in the sixth inning. Santana reached on a dropped third strike to open the seventh, and Matheus followed with a double that put Pensacola ahead for the first time. Connor Caskenette grounded into a 5-4-3 double play in the eighth inning, bringing the score to 5-3.
The Blue Wahoos scored four unanswered runs across four consecutive innings. Jaydenn Estanista earned the win, and Luis Palacios recorded the save after the Pensacola bullpen covered the final five innings without allowing a run. The bullpen allowed one hit and one walk while recording four strikeouts, and Palacios recorded saves on back-to-back days, the first Pensacola occurrence since Jeffery Yan did so in 2023.
Win Reduces Pensacola’s Magic Number
The victory improved Pensacola to 72-51 overall and 36-18 in the second half, a season-best 21 games over .500. The Blue Wahoos also tied a season and franchise best with seven stolen bases as a team. Montgomery fell to 63-61 overall and 28-27 in the second half.
Pensacola’s win, combined with a Columbus Clingstones loss, reduced its magic number to seven games with 14 games remaining. The Blue Wahoos continue their series with the Montgomery Biscuits Saturday night at DABOS Park.
