The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp defeated the Nashville Sounds 6-1 Wednesday night at VyStar Ballpark. Deyvison De Los Santos, Matthew Etzel and Brayden Taylor homered for Jacksonville, which improved to 64-62 overall and 22-30 in the relevant split. Nashville fell to 69-58 overall and 26-26 in the relevant split.
Jacksonville Scores Early
Cam Cannarella led off the first inning with a walk before De Los Santos hit a two-run home run two batters later. The home run was De Los Santos’ 19th of the season and gave Jacksonville a 2-0 lead. Taylor opened the second inning with a solo home run, his first of the season.
Matthew Etzel followed with a double and stole third base in the second inning. Maximo Acosta then drove Etzel home, extending the lead to 4-0. Jacksonville added two more runs in the fourth inning when Taylor doubled and Etzel hit a two-run home run, his 15th of the season.
Pitching Keeps Nashville in Check
Nashville scored its only run in the fifth inning. Eric Brown Jr. walked and advanced to third on an infield single by Brandon Lockridge before Bo Naylor doubled him home. The hit cut Jacksonville’s lead to 6-1.
Six Jacksonville pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts. Matt Pushard worked three scoreless innings with two strikeouts, and Justin King earned the win to improve to 3-0 after recording two strikeouts over 1.1 innings.
Wikelman González struck out three in 1.2 innings. Zach Pop, Jake Walkinshaw and Stephen Jones combined for five strikeouts in three scoreless innings to complete the victory.
Next Game
Jacksonville and Nashville continue the series Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch at VyStar Ballpark. Jacksonville will start right-hander Jace Beck, who is 7-3 with a 3.36 ERA, while Nashville will counter with right-hander Colman Crow, who is 8-1 with a 3.31 ERA.
