Mio Tanaka became a national award winner for the first time Tuesday when the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics named the Keiser University goalkeeper its Defensive Player of the Week. The honor came after Tanaka recorded two additional clean sheets and helped the No. 2 Women’s Soccer team go 2-0 during the week. She made five saves without allowing a goal.

Tanaka has not conceded in 392 minutes and has recorded four consecutive shutouts, raising her season total to four. Her two most recent clean sheets came against ranked opponents No. 8 Grace (Ind.) and No. 1 Cumberlands (Ky.). She also recorded her 10th career clean sheet at Keiser University.

The fourth-year senior leads The Sun Conference with a 0.33 goals-against average this season and has played every minute in goal for the Seahawks. Tanaka is a two-time Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Before earning the national honor, she went 1-0-1 and made a season-high four saves in a 1-1 draw against No. 8 William Carey before posting her first shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Carroll (Mont.).

Keiser University returns to action Wednesday, September 16, at St. Thomas (Fla.) in Miami Gardens. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game is the next scheduled contest for the No. 2 Women’s Soccer team.
